Here's a picture of an 1861 Springfield lock. musket lock 1.jpg And this is a picture of an 1858 Enfield. enfield.jpg Both weapons were used in the war. To me, your hammer looks closer to the Enfield. The US looks like a bridle rosette, which could be Cavalry or artillery or even teams hauling freight. If it's cavalry, then the carbine would have been their weapon, and you would want to compare your hammer with the carbines being used. Both of the above photos show locks on rifle muskets, very different from carbines.

Thanks BosnMate! I have been searching the rosette online and have found a few matches. However, one said it was a WW1 rosette and all the others say Civil War..And in the area I was in (south Mississippi) this was probably cavalry..
