Help with Unknown Brass Thingy

Hey Everyone:

It's been awhile since I've posted anything and for that I apologize. It's been awful wet here in upstate New York and haven't gotten out as much as I'd like. In the month of June for example, we only had 5 days it didn't rain.......well anyway enough rambling and on with the post, which I can't even claim as my own :( It belongs to RMSTEW. A metal detecting buddy and fellow Treasurenet'er.......I'll post the pics and he'll follow my post with the details of the find.

Almost looks like a line\rope lever lock.....to tie down tents,etc where the line can be wrapped around a tree and easily removed

My WAG is - part of a latching or locking mechanism. The whatsit slides along a pin or peg in the slot and the cut-outs at the ends either capture or release another 'part' depending on the extremity of the pin/peg in the slot.
It look like it belongs in a machine shop, somewhere, somehow :icon_scratch:

this item was found at a site in cadyville,ny these days they hold fireman field days, in the past it ewas used as a railroad stop and a baseball field, also found in the same field 1859 indian head 1898,canadian penny,1945standing liberty,several mercury dimes and silver roosevelt dimes numerous wheaties and alot of modern coins.
