I'm hunting a federal crossing where i have found numerous military buttons dating from the 1820's to the 1850's, in fact I found an infantry button today at over 8 inches and this piece was about a foot from it and deeper. It rings up at 40 on my xterra 70 which is a silver signal, but doesnt appear to be. It looks like to be two very tightly wound springs with a wire connecting them. Not ever seen this thought might be part of a bracelet. I am almost certain this is period in age becuase there is zero modern trash. thanks for any help!

Well its definitely older than that. It has the same patina of all the buttons I have found there. Like I said there zero modern trash. And this was deep, just above the clay line. Right around 14 inches.

Since the pic was re sized I now believe it to be a bracelet made from piano wire. :icon_thumright:

How in the world did you think of that?

Sure looks like it, doesn't it?
How in the world did you think of that? He was fixing his chainsaw :laughing7:

That's exactly how. A friends clutch broke on his chainsaw the last time we were using it. That spring was hanging out of it and I happened to be looking for a replacement this morning before looking at T-net. Maybe someone cutting some trees had the same problem years back.

I heard somewhere that during the CW they wrapped piano wire around the cannon's barrel to allow them to put double the amount of powder in to fire the cannon ball farther without the cannon blowing up/apart. But I dont know if this is piano wire. :dontknow: It looks more like a steel spring. Is it steel?

I think we lost the OP he green checked on his second post? If it is piano wire it's copper and steel. Could it be a lantern handle?
JMO, it's not a spring. :icon_thumright:

If its steel, all he has to do is stretch it out and see if it still holds tension. If it springs back, its a spring, right?

sorry guys just happened to checked my post... its copper the connecting piece is brass, not steel. It could possibly be piano wire. Connecting piece seems to be handcrafted. and it is stiff not springy at all. bends instead of snaps back.

G.H., If the core wire is brass then it isn't piano wire. I still think possibly some type of hand crafted handle for either a lantern or camp type coffee pot, maybe a small cooking pot? well I don't know, just put in the scrap bucket and go back to that site and keep looking. Something good is waiting to be found. HH :icon_thumright:

Thanx BK! I have found 3 dragoon coat buttons, a pocket watch, a blade of a pocket knife, and a tin lid of somesort and a handfull of sharps ringtails all in about 2 foot hole. Beginning to think I might have stumbled on a skirmish.
