Top photo is a run of the mill large staple.

Your bottom photo - and I'm kinda in disbelief - appears to be a nipple wrench from a Colt Root pistol.

Appears to have the correct dishing, cylinders out from the flat shank, and I'd say it has the typical damage associated with the screwdriver end - snapped off- or perhaps rotted away.

Regardless, it is well worth spending the $2 and getting a jug of distilled white vinegar - soak it for 24 hours, hit it with a BRASS brush... and if need be soak it longer.

Once its clean, snap some more photos... send me the tightest measurements you can take of each span (tip to the corner of the elbow) and I'll get you a positive ID of which model it was intended for.

Not to discourage you, but in good condition (which yours is not), the Root wrenches sell for 300-400 bucks apiece.

Regardless, damn nice find.
You really ought to clean it up.

If your friend decides he doesn't care to conserve it and wants to let it go to a good home - put him in touch with me.
