Hi Gang ,

Just found this today 23 Nov 09 at a soccer field in Germantown Ohio:
1790 Half Spanish Reale with Mexico mint "M" with "o" over it.

This is just a little smaller than a dime and very thin. It is in good shape but a little dented.

Help! I can not find this coin online or in my coin book. Mine has a "IV" on the obverse in the upper left quadrant, whereas the ones shown online show only a half Reale with "IIII" marking vs my "IV." I read about a transition coin but theu never showed it. Is that what mine is and does that make it worth more?

The Carlos IV 1/2 real was minted in both "IV" and "IIII" varieties.
The "IV" was minted in 1789 and 1790 (18 mm; .896.fine silver) with the bust of Carlos III, not IV or IIII.
The "IIII" was also minted in 1790 (only) with the bust of Carlos III, not IV or IIII.
The "IV" is worth a premium over the "IIII"
And to further confuse things, the 1/2 real "IIII" was also minted between 1792 and 1808 showing the bust of Carlos IV, not III (three) as in the previous two issues.

Don, Great thanks and my head is spinning. What do you think it is worth then and how can I find more about it online?

A few years ago the retail value of the 1790 (IV) ranged between $12 VG up to $100 in EF. The same values are now put on the "IIII".
What I said earlier about a 'slight premium' was from a 1981 reference book. The prices here are from 2003.

Well I found my first one today. It is a "transitional" showing the IV. When I looked closely it appears to be a IV over a III. Has anyone come across this?

Also notice the amazing counterstamp!

And Neil's coin came from the Nueva Guatemala mint versus the Mexico City mint.
Yes, most unusual (for me, anyway) is that countermark--though could it be a private versus government mark?

I dont know much about them but most of the counterstamps I have seen come from Guatemaula.

The counterstamps I saw were sun and mountain type. :dontknow:
