Help with rock indentification

Family mystery: Found in the 1960's in Georgia near Savannah River approximately 30 miles up river from Savannah when farmer was clearing land for a new field.

Approximately 12" in length and very heavy.

Any ideas?

It almost looks like some kind of volcanic flow, or has been subjected to very high heat. Other than that, I have no idea. Just a first thought. Good luck on identifying it.

Welcome.

It appears to be 'ropy lava', sometimes referred to by its Hawaiian name of 'pāhoehoe' because there are extensive flows of it in the Hawaiian islands. It occurs elsewhere of course, in volcanic locations. I know there are deposits of it further inland around Cartersville in Georgia, but I don't know how far towards Savannah it can be found. A bit of Googling will likely tell you.

It often has an iridescent metallic or glassy-looking surface appearance, like this beautiful example (yours is rather nice too):

It does look like it could have been part of a lava flow. Maybe a glacier transported it down to us.
