Freaking awesome rolling block. Maybe the Dakota and western guys will recognize the symbol. Nice...

Don't know where it was found at, but the marking on the right
could easily be a brand. Could be a landowner bought several,
and then marked them numerically as well as carving in his
brand, much like people today put their names on personal stuff.

The gun may have been owned by a wealthy rancher at one time. It's possible that the etching on the right may be a cattle branding symbol. The other one may be a branding mark also... (Three-dot). A lot of large ranches had more than one brand.

Just a thought!

I like where you are going with this....does anyone have knowledge or examples of a ranch doing this?

Try a Google image search using "Remington Rolling Block, branded" and you'll find
several examples of different brands. Oddly, the pic you posted above is among them
(with the Tnet url).

Seems like a plausible solution, but certainly not absolute until you can find out
if there's another like it.

I don't know if TNet will let this post but; If you go to gunbroker.com and post your pic. and questions, they will be able to give you the answers you are after. They have very excellent resources and are friendly folks, willing to help- just like here at TNet. To post your ? you will have to signup- no biggie. I too think that your markings are related to a specific ranch/ brand. They do not look like the quality engraving that would have come from the factory. You might also surf for; ranch brands, cattle brands, registered brands, etc. HH yelnif...

He is not trying to sell and website is not competing forum so I personally don't see an issue with it.

The grip is wrapped in rawhide too from an old split. It is pretty beat up and a carbine at that...short...more a a sadle gun actually.

thanks, I will give it a shot and let you know what I find out.

Rawhide wrap on a broken stock usually indicates Indain ownership and repair.

here are a couple better pics...ignore the feathers, my Blackfeet wife added those....

My thoughts are that it needs to be checked out by a expert on Remington
firearms. Hopefully there's a local museum or a Remington expert in the
local gun shop.

You might have a rifle worth 10's of thousands, or maybe just a few hundred.
I would definitely remove the feathers when you take it in to be checked, as they
were not original on the weapon.
