Help with probes

As a newbie to the hobby I have a couple of questions about probes. I've seen brass probes advertised for coin hunting but can't figure out what the heck they are used for. Do you stick the probe into a hole that you have already dug or do you stick it into the ground where you think your signal picked up? Do you use the probe to remove the coin? I am just starting out in the hobby and there's not a club or anyone close by that I can ask. I hope these questions do not sound too dumb, but the forum is where I have learned ALL of my information about THing. Thank You!

no such thing as a dumb question chickenhunter! ;) those brass probes are used both ways actually. once you get a target you can probe the ground untill you hit something. then you will know where and how deep your target is. you can also cut a plug and if the coin is in the plug you can probe for it without tearing up the plug too much. i personally dont use one myself but i may be looking into an electronic probe soon. that seems to be a lot easier to use than an old screwdriver or a brass probe in my opinion.

Be careful when using coin probes. I have seen some VERY nice coins ruined because the tip of the probe scratched the suface of the coin. I stay away from them. Some people like them, but not myself.

I'll have to agree with Steeler Fan, I recently used a probe and scratched a coin pretty bad. I purchased an electronic probe/pinpointe and now I don't leave home without it. Once you dig your hole you stick the probe in and as it gets about an inch or two from the target it starts vibrating.

chickenhunter - a good brass probe is an excellent tool for recovering items once you find a target. yes they can scratch a coin, only (and I do mean only) if you go stabbing the ground with the probe. you should use a gentle hand with this type of probe and you will find your object in good condition. a good coin shooter will go through at least one to two brass probes a year. remember brass is soft so it will wear down when used properly. good luck and don't give up on your quest for new inputs or questions.

I have a brass prob with aluminum tip. I can pick a coin out up to 4in deep with out cutting the sod. SASQUATSH <><

surfrat96, what kind of probe/pinpointer do you have? I have one that you alomost have to touch the object before it will sound off. It is one of those $35.00 promo jobs that I got with my MD.

Jimmileo, I've got the Auto Max V2 pinpointer. Works very well, I'm glad I purchased it. I was huntin with Floater last week and saw how he was finding his coins so fast, with his Auto Max while I was sifting though all the dirt with my fingers feeling for the coin. That made me buy one.

It's pretty good at finding the target at about 1-2 inches. One thing I need to let you know is that the probe is made out of plastic, so you can't go jamming it into the hard ground, or pry with it. Hope this helps! HH 8)

That's the same one I have but it doesn't work as well as yours apparently. You nearly have to touch the object unless it is something big like your digger or MD!

Jim, did you try adjusting the sensitivity know? Maybe your batteries are weak. If it's like that with a fresh battery, maybe it's a faulty unit.
