I am hunting in an area that was used as an overnight campsite on several occasions; my problem is am I on a picket site or the main camp?

How far are pickets usually from main camps?
How big of area would 4,000 cavalry troops need for an overnight stop?

This camp would have been used by confederate cavalry or mounted infantry.

The area I am hunting has several ridge tops and very few large flat areas that are not located in the creek bottom. I have found a spur, and several bullets and percussion caps, no buttons, on one ridge specifically but have found nothing on the adjoining ridges. In the field adjacent to the creek I have found several round pistol balls and one eagle “D” button but no rifle bullets. I also have not found any relics associated with horses, other than the odd horse shoe that may be from farming.

Thanks for your help and any ideas you may have.
