You just have to not give up, never come straight out and ask, introduce yourself first and talk about how the harvest is going ect, then just lead up to the ask. Forget estate land, and land that has the steward scheme...don't give up, because it can be soul destroying some days.

Yes it is a hard process. Its finding the first farmer that is difficult.

I suppose more farmers will trust us when we have already been on land.

Finding the farmers is easy, especially this time of year. The hard part is catching him right, don't stop him when he's combining or ploughing, try to catch him in the farm yard when he has a moment to spend with you. Sunday usually isn't a good time either.

My parents always told me, "Never interrupt an adult working, unless it is an emergency". Most ppl working don't want to hear or be bothered with your "hobby/enjoyment", they're working.

I thought this was a real good thread with valid points on approaching ppl. It is a sales job, getting that permission.
Good luck too and HH!

If you were from the U.S. I would suggest finding villages with just one pub that does Bed and Breakfast and when they ask how long your staying say it depends on getting permission to detect on local ground. The pub landlord then asks old Bob, Jim whatever if they would let you detect. Saves a lot of rejection. For myself I'm off on a months detecting trip next week in my motorhome. What I am doing now is checking potential good areas and matching then up with farms that allowing camping/caravaning. I book in for the night and they have seen I haven't got two heads and I say I'm looking to detect and they most often say you can whilst your staying. They get your pitch fees so it pays for them to keep you on their land. Dud site...move on !

The detecting sites books produced in the past ( pay per day sites ) are not much good now as they have been done to death for years.
