I have seen some of the great patent search and work that some of you out there have pulled off in the past and now I could use some of that crafty work.

I found this unknown ball of metal when MD'ing in my yard, now I must note that I live in a turn of the century sawmill town and there has been lots of activity here over the lase 110 years.

I have posted three photos, the first is the mass reconstructed to what it look like when I pulled it from the ground, the second photo is the mass pulled apart in pieces and you can see what looks like a metal scren type insert that has holes all throug it and the other metal was on the outside with the shaft stuck down in the middle. The third photo shows the shaft by itself.

Now it is the shaft that has the patent date printed at the knob end, the info on the end reads: "PAT'D. MAR. 27-06." I am hoping to id this thing from the patent date, perhaps it is an early clock or some type of wind up mechanical device.

Any and all help is appreciated!!!!!

looks like the remains of my wifes car brakes after she called me and said her car blew up! $200. bucks and 4 hours later, i had her patched up. over the years, she has called me and THE CAR BLEW UP! the first time i'm like, omg, are you ok? then i learned. blew up means flat tire, radiator leak, radio quit. i know, not a metal detector story, but i feel better.
