Hello,

I have a Marine button that has a Civil War back mark as the Federal Navy - Albert NA113, Tice NA230A18

I can not find any information for this back mark for the Marine button.

My question is it a Civil War Button and is it a rare version?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

The McGuinn-&-Bazelon book on dating button-backmarks says the firm of Joseph (Josh) Starkey was in business at 23 Conduit St. London from 1859 to 1899, so your button could date from anywhere in that time-range.

Unfortunately, there is no match-up for the EXACT details of your US Marines button's emblem in either the Tice book or the Albert book.

But there is one clue which MIGHT answer your question about whether your Marines button is from the civil war era or afterward. That clue is your button's precisely-measured size. The very largest size of the pre-1866 US Marines buttons was 23 millimeters in diameter. If your button is larger than that, it is postwar.

Please measure it with a Digital Caliper and tell us its size, in millimeters.
