Help with GTAx 550

Hello everyone, I've read the forum for a while but just joined today. I bought a GTAx 550 about a week ago. I have used it several times but haven't had much luck with it. I'll get a signal and I'll pinpoint it but when I dig it, it's nowhere to be found. If I do find something, I've created a 10" hole because it is not in the spot it was supposed to be! Am I doing something wrong? I have the Proformance Elliptical coil on it right now. Where does this coil pinpoint? I live in Milledgeville, GA, a town with a TON of history but I can't dig anywhere yet because I don't want to make huge holes looking for things! Thanks for the help, Arthur

I have a gtax1000, about the same detector, but different coils, i haven't use mine for quite a ling time as i love my cz6a to much, gtax 550 excellent machine, first get to factory settings,if i remember, with power up hold on button for about 10 seconds, will get you to factory defalt, i a clean area lay a coin down and pass over it with in a X pattern, focus on signal tone and location of coil, now press pinpoint do same, and bingo. place a newspaper over coin and do the same. a little practice and you will be scooping em up.
good luck

I have gtax 750 pinpoints on center of coil. what it says is what you get...... at that depth !!! a full size burried can will make it tell a lie ..will sometimes show a quarter at 1 inch ..if you dig and its not there..its a can ! picked up $11.00 in clad sat in three hrs . sat.. $6.87 in three hrs . three hrs is limit bad back will let me hunt, by then I look like a drunk trying to crawl back to truck . you will have good luck with 550...its a promise . I have kinfolks in Fla that bought one . They swear by it .

By all means get you a handheld pinpointer. After I struggled without one for a couple of months I broke down and spent the $35.00 for an Automax II from Kellyco. What I found was the machines pinpointing was fine, it was me! I was either just missing the target or had already dug it up and didn't realize it. Many times a coin expecially will be the same color as the dirt and you just can't always spot it in the soil, or it will be stuck just on the edge of your plug hole.. Now that I have a handheld pinpointer I wouldn't think of hunting without it! Monty

Thanks for the help everyone. I especially like the newspaper idea. I tried burying a quarter and pinpointing it but I could see where to dig and that didn't help at all. I also saw somewhere on here to glue coins to cardboard and do it that way. I knew if I got discouraged I could come here and have my problem solved!

Thanks again,
Arthur
