This is an aerial of my parents place, plus the surrounding area. The green circle at the bottom is my parents place, the green at the top right is an foundation that is confirmed.

Within the blue circle, I have found square nails, bits of iron, and a keyplate, so I am fairly certain there was a structure there as well.

The red circle is where I need the help. My dad told me years ago he walked back along the fence line there and there was an old house. Last weekend I walked back there and could find nothing. Is there anything within the red circle that looks like a structure or a place where there may be one? I may have just not walked back far enough.

Thanks

Kiros, I'm not an expert by any means - let's get that out of the way pronto. LOL But looking within the red circle, I would be inclined to investigate the light colored area that is rectangular in shape. I'm talking about the spot that is just above the middle of the area encircled in red. It appears to be the only anomaly within the red circle.

Stoney, your question mark is the same area I was trying to explain. It seems to be an anomaly.

If I could figure out how to mark other people's photos, I'd mark another area that interests me. It's the line of trees that is just below the green circle in the first photo from Kiros32. There is a line of trees and in that line is a small white area. That's also got my curiosity piqued.

look horizontaly to the left from the blue circle. just out side the red. your dad might have lost his barrings a little once he was in the trees. you will want to look for a patch of younger trees. ones that are all thinner than the others. or a group of weed trees that will be clusterd together, different that older heathy trees.

Thanks to Stoneyt56, I learned how to mark up other people's pictures. What fun! (thank you, Stoney). The small circles in brown are mine. Item #1 is rectangular and vacant - possibly the former site of a house or barn. Item #2 is irregular in shape, but also vacant. Both locations could be promising - or total wastes of time. I dunno.

Thanks everyone. I will definitely check out those spots next time I am there.

Have you tried looking at the area using this site http://maps.live.com/ some of the pictures are from different times of the year and you can change the direction you are viewing the site from to give you alternative views of the property. I have found this works well in my area of NY, better than google earth. Just a thought.

I have tried this and though it is a remarkable tool, because the area is quite rural, it doesn't offer the "Birds Eye View" in that particular part. So I am limited to an aerial view. Thanks for the tip though.

I would have to agree---there also appears to be a road cut that leads to it too.

I think Kayper is on the right track. By comparing photos made at different times of the year (shadows & tree canopies are different), you'll gain additional info. You might also want to visit the county courthouse and check out some of their older plat and 7-1/2 minute USGS topo maps, they most likely would show the cultural features you're interested in plus, the physical topographic features. The more photos & maps you have to compare the better. Looks promising!

Good luck!
