I just cant seem to get it right. Can anyone try to edit/clean up my picture please. There is still a lil crud on the 8 in 1817 but all the defintion is still there.Im trying to send a picture to Heritage auction gallery to see what value my coin has.I cant figure out why some of these LC go for so much more money then listed in the coin books.so many varieties without any big differences that i can see or distinguish.any help would be appreciated.

Re: help with enhancing 1817 LC pictures

Hey Scrap. Most digital cameras have what is called a Macro setting. That lets you get very nice close ups of your item and have it in focus. The Macro setting on my camera is initiated by pressing the lower portion of the same button on the back of the camera that allows you to shuttle through photos that you have already taken when you are viewing them. Using your Macro feature requires you to just the opposite of what you would think. You have to set your zoom lens all the way out and not in like you would think. Then you simply move your camera really close to the item and you will get the close up that way. You will see the image in the view finder get really clear as you move closer to the item. If you have your camera instruction booklet, look for the instructions related to Macro and it should put you on the right course. Your pics will be crisp and clear past that point.

Hope this helps.

Scrapdoggie

Do you have a scanner? If you do scan the coin and repost it kinda big and then I could fix it. This is a scan of my "25 Merc...scanning works for coins

Re: help with enhancing 1817 LC pictures

Using your 1817 Large Cent as an example as to why there is such a difference in what you see in book prices and auction prices. First off, auction prices and e-bay can be anywhere, just the nature of the beast. But the a big reason why some coins in the same year, like your 1817 go for vastly different prices is not only because of condition, but because there is a demand for the rarer varieties of that year. Supply and Demand is in the coin industry just like anything else.

The 1817 Large Cent has 17 different varieties, most are relatively common, but there is one variety that is rare. Since there are a fair amount of Large Cent (variety) collectors in the world, the demand for that rare one would be there, and the bidding would go high, thus the exorbitant amount for a coin like that and any others that are very scarce or rare on the market.

Heritage will not give a appraisal (value) without charging you to do so. If you can get a clear photo of the coin, both front and back, and in a nice cropped big all coin photo, I can attribute the variety for you and most likely give very rough ballpark figure. Most ground found coppers do not demand what is even listed in Red book due to corrosion that is on the coin, whether you think so or not, but IF the coin is rare, they seem to be less strict on how they consider the coin for sale.

If you join or have joined Heritage's website, once a year they offer a free appraisal of a coin. I had one done this past year by them, but in my opinion, they low balled the coin, since I had it appraised by two other appraisers (professionals who are friends)before them..........

Kodak Easy Share c330 and it has micro(tulip icon ) right?

Re: help with enhancing 1817 LC pictures

You are right. Most Macro settings are represented by a flower, normally a tulip. Get that to show on your screen and you are in that mode. Then make sure your zoom is all the way out and not all the way in. Move the camera toward your coin until you see the image get clear and you are there. Don't try to zoom in with the camera zoom because the Macro won't work that way. It takes a little practice because you have to hold the camera really still when you push the shutter button to take the picture. If you have a tiny tripod, it will help you keep the camera still. I rest my hand that is holding the camera on the table or surface that the coin or item is on to steady my hand.

Good Luck,

DaChief
