Good evening all, I found this crucifix in a local school yard earlier in the week between rain storms and I have been wondering about the chain. The medallion is pewter or pot metal but the chain came out of the ground shiny like a silver coin even though it had been in the ground long enough that the steel in the clasp had rusted away.

The question in my mind is would a medallion than seems to be cheap be put on a silver chain? Could it be stainless steel? A magnet won't stick to stainless, will it?

Thanks for looking. HH.

Stainless (Steel)? or did you mean sterling (Siilver)?

The pendent look old may be a keepsake.

Thanks for the replies guys, I checked it with a magnet and it did not stick, I suspected that it was stainless but I do not know much about jewelry and wanted to get other thoughts.

Pipster, I suspect there may be different types or grades of stainless steel.

Nick, thank you for the great information and I hope my mistake did not offend you or anyone else. HH.

A magnet will NOT stick to a good grade of Stainless Steel. It will however stick to the cheaper "Japanese" Stainless I call it. It doesnt look silver. Silver will turn.
I am born and raised in a catholic family. If near death, it is good to have a priest present to administer "last rights", I think it is called.
