Welcome to T-Net treasurehuntr2 !

The first thing you'll get help with is the pictures... I made this to help the others see them better.

5 buttons.webp

The next thing I'll help you with is this; advice. If you can get photos/scans of the button backs, and/or tell us what might be written on the back or each (back marks) it'll help folks know/learn how old they are as well... and better be able to help.

It's no problem... I'm thinking you scanned those buttons and they did come out pretty good, but try using a program (microsoft paint is perfect) to crop out all that extra stuff around the edges, save the smaller picture, and then post those. That same program also resizes pictures which is also easy, and helpful sometimes.

#2 is "great seal" uniform button---they were first issued in 1902 so the button is after 1902

the "great seal" enlisted mans button (#2) are gilted or as most folks call it "gold plated" and were first issued in 1902---Ivan

thanks ivan.... do you, or does anyone else know if any of these buttons are actually made of gold, and are they of any real value? are there collectors interested in them?

Hang in there... more replies to come. I would guess by the pics they are all gold gilted, but prolly worth very little.

Are there any backmarks on any of them, or can you post pictures of teh backs?

there are folks who collect buttons indeed ---gold buttons would be a highly rare thing however and almost all "service" mens buttons were gilted or "plated" types ----the cost of gold buttons would have been way too much ---think about it--while most common "gilted" buttons are not very high dollar some of the buttons can be worth a bit of cash to collectors depending on their type , rarity and condition----Ivan

First I have never heard of a solid gold button. Some of them maybe gold plated.

1. Looks to be a modernish blazer button

2. Already IDed

3. ?

4. Looks to be late Victorian Navy Button (1880s). Could be British but we need backmarks?

5. ?

OH Yeah & welcome to Tnet from the UK ;D

hi folks. sorry i'm just getting these pics of the backs of the buttons. i'm sortof new to alot of this computer
stuff too. and thanks jim, for the help i hope this comes out alright, and thanks to everyone else for all the
input. i've been digging and hunting in s. f. ca. for about 3 years now, mostly in the old "barbary coast" area.
this area, and it's immediate surroundings are where most of the debri and remains from the 1906 earthquake
and fire were shoveled to, as landfill. with a booming growth cycle, the costruction companies have unearthed many
places in the landfill where i regularly dig. i have found some incredibly cool, and interestig things!! and of course, many things i've been wanting to find out about, and until now, have not been able to do. so, i really do appreciate the help, and i'll be sharing some of these curiousities with you soon. thanks again!!
