Hi. I found this button in my backyard yesterday. I think it may be from CW era navy. but not positive. The back mark is "Evans & Hassall Phila." Anyone have any information or know of where I can look it up? button.jpgbutton1.jpg

don't have clue but it is a nice one, love the buttons, they are like a blast from the past, little reminders of those before us

Evans & Hassall, Philadelphia, 418 Arch St. Firm of George O. Evans & William S. Hassall dated firm 1859-66. This George Evans had the same identical names as a George O. Evans who was a merchant from 1859-99. Both Evans & Hassall previously worked for Horstmann Bros. at 723 Chestnut St. The Evans & Hassall firm was dissolved in April 1866 and it became Wilson & Hutchinson and later J.H. Wilson & Co. Evans & Hassall dealt in military furnishings and ladies dress trimmings. The firm ordered cuff US staff buttons from Scovill in 1864. The backmark of your button: Evans & Hassall*/Phila used on NA112 Typed the above info from "American Military Button Makers and Dealers; Their Backmarks & Dates by William F McGuinn & Bruce S. Bazelon

Just looked in my Albert's Button book .
&
Your Button look's like the NA 112 IMO
&
"Navy; 2-piece with border and circle of rope.
A. The device, eagle facing left, upper fluke of anchor behind left wing.
"R & W. Robinson/Extra Rich" ; 23 mm; pre-1850.
(There are many post-1850 makers and variants , as this pattern was in use until 1941)

Hope this info helps..

p.s. My Book also states that Evans & Hassall. Back Marks date from 1860-68.

This book is Quite a Few years old but I believe est, 98% of the info Within is still accurate.

Davers
