Hi,

I recently dug a small old button with some markings on the back. I have tried to research the name on the internet with no luck. I was wondering if someone might be able to help. The button is approx. 1 inch across with "J. Manns extra rich gilt" written on the back. I may be mistaken on the words "Extra Rich" because they are worn. I can't make out any design on the front. Unfortunatley, I am not able to post a pic at this time. I am trying to figure what age the button is and what it may have been worn on. Thanks in advance.

J

J. Mann was in business from 1805 to 1843, from best I can tell. The button is a flat button, and could've been worn on a variety of clothing items. These buttons were used up till about the Civil War (buttons were re-used when possible rather than tossed out, unless their shanks were broken).

You're probably right about the quality mark "Extra Rich." It is a common one on buttons of this type.
