I found this button at a property in Independence MO built in 1843. There are legible backmarks Scovill from 10 to 2 o'clock and Extra from 8 to 4 o'clock. The word Quality does not appear on this button and I have not found this one in research w/o the word Quality on it. There is an eagle and shield, but I can not make out the symbol in the shield. Anyone have any input? Thanks in advance.

I can barley make it out but it looks like a Eagle I (Infantry) Scovill has you know was a huge button manufacture in the 19th c. "Scovill extra" back-mark dates to the civil war period

According to mcGuinn-&-Bazelon's excellent book on dating button backmarks, the Scovill button-manufacturing firm used the name "Scovills & Co" from 1840 to 1850. Afterward, it was re-named as the Scovill Manufacturing Company. It continued in the button-making business under that name until 1962.
