Possibly an ancient "VOT" or something close... I'll have a look...

If you can't figure it out - drill it with holes and go with the button idea! :)

As an EXAMPLE ONLY you might see the similarities in this Constantine ancient.

I think you have a coin... but there is no way I'll commit to an attribution...

I'd get it cleaned up and go from there...

I'm not surprised that Montana Jim probably nailed the ID of the coin; he knows his stuff. What does surprise me (if I read your post correctly) is that you recently received this coin in a bag of dimes from a bank. To believe a bank would receive, process and distribute this nearly 1,700 year old coin may set some sort of record for 'bank finds'.

Jim, you beat me to it.

I think this will clean up well.

I think you beat everyone's CRH finds by about 1,000 years. ;D

Assuming that you are correct, what is the best way to get it cleaned up?

Also any idea of value (once again making the assumption that the ID is correct)?

I am not an expert at "cleaning" coins and wouldn't want to risk anything terribly valuable. My assumption is the ID listed is fairly common coin and has a relatively low monetary value. From a personal find perspective it has a high value either way as its not something I'm likely to come across very often as a find.

Not everyone's finds. Someone posted an undated roman coin find last year too.

Well done, I have found enough to know it would come up pretty good.

In the future you may wish to clean your ancients in the manner shown in at this site:

Don.....

I doubt I'll find many more based on my primary method of finding coins.

Interestingly that was close to the method I used. Granted I haven't completely cleaned the coin yet, just enough to identify it. It still needs a bit more done to it, especially on the obverse. I was surprised to see how much detail was left in the part of the wreath the cleaned up, looks like the coin itself underneath might be in pretty good shape when I finish cleaning it.
