A friend of mind found this mask in Mississippi by the MS River back in the 70's. It's now on display at the local grocery store. No one knows anything about it. My gut feeling is voodoo related? It doesn't look like African decent. There were rumors of devil worship in the general area at that time as well. We also have Indian mounds in the area. What's y'all's opinion on it? Thank you!!

Hey bb,

That is really cool. I don't know Mississippian artifacts hardly at all. Would like to hear more back story... Do they have it on the top shelf at the store? What kinda wood?

Thank you Surf! I did some research on the "Mound Builders" Indians and I didn't find anything. As far as masks go.

perhaps...effigy masks were popular...
wood doesn't hang out long in the historical record...
i'd like to know how far into the mud or mound they dug to find something in this condition...
this wood does not appear to have suffered the elements long.

That's my thinking too! He said it was sticking out the ground when the Mississippi River was low. He was a teenager then and was playing on a sandbar when he spotted it. It could have washed from up North. It did remind me of a dried out piece of driftwood.
