Hi!

I would apreciate some help grading this coin. I know it's hard to grade from pictures, but the pictures are pretty good.

This is the coin I bought to start of my US coin collection, it's a Morgan silver dollar with 8TF, VAM21 with broken R&B. I bought it off ebay and it did run a bit higher than I had hoped for but I really liked the toning of it. The second coin I'm going for is a walking half dollar. Currently no specific plans for the collection, starting with some coins I like and will take it from there.

The coin has mint-state details, but it appears to have been cleaned....so that will knock value off of it.

Yeah that's what I thought, that it had been cleaned. The second coin I posted, with green backgrounds was listed as "AU", not a strict grade but more indicating it's around AU. I havn't recieved it yet but from the photos I just love the toning, hopefully it's the same when it arrives :icon_jokercolor:

The other Morgan does appear to be a VAM 21, but unfortunatley that VAM doesn't carry much of a premium. Also, I would agree with a low to mid AU grade, but it has also been cleaned and retoned.

This is the walking half dollar I'm looking at (listed as AU), stunning in my eyes. I'm new to coins and for me it's more important that I like the coin and how it looks than the value. Hopefully this one will be mine :tongue3:

There's definitely some rub on the obverse, but it looks MS-63 to me...But Walking Liberties are certainly not my specialty.

The 1896 Morgan would be XF but it's been cleaned and probably dug up from the ground. Essentially it's worthless.

The 1878 on the other hand is a great coin, and I would guess should grade XF for sure. It would be AU except for the wear on the front hair and some of the very fine points of the Eagle. That is a nice example, hoping it wasn't cleaned of course.

The Walker looks incredible and should grade an AU at the lowest. Might be an MS but it can be hard to tell from pictures. I believe that seller takes all his Walker pictures like that, with a black background. He/she sells some great looking coins. Don't think I ever bought any from them though. I'm focusing on collecting AU or better Walkers ;D

Oh, and you might wanna find a coin you like and start collecting only that kinda coin, otherwise you end up with a ton of different coins and no focused collection if you know what I mean. Some people just love all coins and wanna collect everything, and that is ok too.

Great places to look for coins are antique shops, flea markets and estate sales. Ebay is ok if you know what to look for, but you'll almost always pay for them. Getting a bargain is like hitting the lottery on there. Everyone is looking for a bargain, and they all know what to look for.

My initial plan is to get one of each coin that I like and put them in a showcase, probably most older silver coins. Living in Sweden it's not that easy to find American coins of nice grade I would guess (havn't been to any coin shops as of yet). Morgans seems like a good coin to collect if to focus on one, plenty different versions, and seems to be a lot of them out there on the market.
