I dug this today and I believe it’s a coin of some type. There is lettering around the edge on one side and what looks like a bust in the center. There is nothing identifiable on the other side. The letters look like part of the word states? ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1528332626.154950.jpg

I would have guessed that to be the back of a flat button, with part of the word Plated (silver plated).

No sign of it ever having a shank that I can see.

Hmm, you guys are probably right, but why no sign of a shank? That’s what threw me.

In times of small change shortage flat buttons did enter circulation - that may be why this button was possibly altered and the shank smoothed over. Someone wanted to turn it into a "coin" that could pass.

Thanks guys, and yes I agree, it’s a button. Had my heart pumping for a while though....
