This should have been an easy one so I volunteered to help a friend. Turned out it isn't as easy as I thought so I need some help from somebody with the books. I don't have a picture but I don't think it would matter. The button is coat-size and plain on the front and has a stamped backmark that reads "A. Benedict Extra Rich" The company that would become the Waterbury Button Company was started by Aaron Benedict in 1812. All the backstamps I can find from the early days of the company are ones like "Benedict & Co." "Benedict & Coe" "Benedict and Burnham" etc. but no "A. Benedict"

It seems to me that this would be one of the first buttons out the door but I can't find one. So can someone please enlighten me. I got myself into this mess and need some help getting out. I'm about $999 short on buying the book.

Thanks for the help!!

Daryl

Bioproffesor, "A. Benedict" rich, extra rich etc., is listed in Tice as being used between 1823 and 1829. In 1829 it switched to Bennedict and Coe". Hope this helps.

Perfect. Thanks!!! Guess I'll have to get the books. Is this the book most people use -

Dating Buttons - A Chronology of Button Types, Makers, Retailers and Their Backmarks: Companion to Uniform Buttons of the United States, 1776-1865 by Warren K Tice (Hardcover - 2002)
1 Used & new from $800.00

That's a lot of AA's

Thanks,

Daryl

Bioprof, no, you don't need that one. The plain old "Uniform Buttons...." has all this information about backmarks in it. It's very light on info about the early Rev period though, and you might want to get Albert's book as a companion.

Great! Thanks. I just couldn't go the $900 route and would have to keep leeching off other people who did spend the big bucks. And that's not fun or fair.
