Help with 2 coins

Good morning everyone,
My son was given a rather large sack of coins from a family member that recently passed. All of the coins apart from these 2 are foreign/world. We are trying to figure what these are and why one has been "scored" maybe. Any ideas or answers are appreciated.

First one is a V Nickel. Second one is a Braided Hair Large Cent. Both are US coins.

Possibly to make change; half cents were still issued then

Your large cent may have been counter stamped by a merchant.

Cut coin. They used them early on especially for families who weren't well off. They would snap off a small portion for something less than penny. Kind of like the Brittish "hay penny" https://www.google.com/webhp?source...2&ie=UTF-8#q=WHAT+WAS+the+brittish+hay+penny?
