How big is it?

Looks like an Indian Head/Buff Nick on the left side... :-\

I think it's a token or something other that a coin... interesting.

Is the Indian Head Nickel for Size ?

If that is front & Reverse

I'd say Rare Hobo Nickel.

Usually the Indian is Changed

I have a Thaler with the same shield design--it dates to the late 1700's.  I suspect that's an oooooold coin.

Rechecking, it's similar but not identical to the arms on the reverses of certain c. 1820's coins of Saxony.

Oh, well...

Not 100% nailed, wonder if it matches in thickness, and if anything can be seen on the other side. The reason I say that is , Coin facsimile buttons! I have a 1764 2 Reale button that is nothing more than a button with one side have the identical design of the 2 Reale Obverse.

Only playing devil's advocate here since the photo of the other side does suggest a button shank possibilty from what I see. I do not have a Pfhenning to compare thickness on but I would think barring the finder seeing any detail on the other side, the thickness comparison or weight would be definitive. :)

He did state it was thin, so is the Pfhenning a thin coin or a thicker coin?

There are one-piece Saxony buttons (army, court, police) bearing a very similar coat of arms, of course. In fact, that's what first led me to speculate that this piece might be from there or one of the related German states. However, the Saxony buttons that I've seen are convex/domed and could hardly be described as coin-like.

Good luck in the chase! :)

I only made the suggestion of it being a button due to the lack of details on the back and a funny area where a shank would be. Again, only the person holding the coin can really determine if he can compare it with a 1700 era Pfhenning for thickness, weight and a very detailed look of the Reverse side looking for any indication of those letters on the Phnenning examples you posted. A coin facsimile button (Contemporary) would be a cool find, since they are not as common as the real coin itself. :)

Both of my facsimile coin buttons are flat like the coin they represent.

I think it's a coin. Awesome! Mid-to-late 1700's?
