Help, What coin is this, I thought is was a NE 12 pence, but isn't close looking

I found this coin in NH. I thougth at first it was a 12 pence. Or a copy of. Then I was told that the XII intents are round. See Pic, The real 12 pence is square. I have nothing on the back. It has also been suggested that it is a 12 Maravedis. Please email me at jay_n_hanna@yahoo.com if you have any ideas. I am eager to learn about this find. Besides. It is driving me crazy. Looks like a Roman coin. But I'm no expert... What's it made of?

I believe that it is indeed a 17th century Spanish 12 maravedis. Compare it to the coin on the right at:
