Home site dating from mid 1700s. This brass chain is decorative. It would not have been for strength. Yet it's pretty thick and stout. WAY too heavy for a watch chain. Found about 12" of it. Can't think of what it might have been used for. Ideas? Please?!

Maybe for holding back the curtains? :dontknow:

I would think a chandelier, and because of the way it is constructed, I would guess it's a little later, like mid 19th century.

Congrats Parson on a nice find. I think this is a tieback for not a curtain but a drapery. They're basically the same thing but the drapery was much heavier and was intended to control heat loss inside the house from room to room and against the cold leaky windows. The social areas of the home would have been bordered with them. The bedrooms had fireplaces but were basically made comfortable with warm blankets on the bed and bed warmers. Looked like a popcorn popper and filled with hot coals. Run back and forth between the sheets by the "staff".

Very nice find!
