Found this today in a field that has yielded coins dating back to the 1700s. It's the same size as a large cent and pretty much all of the detail is on the obverse. I see "78" on the reverse directly opposite of the head.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Update... new reverse pic - soaked the back in oil. The date is 1825 and it has someone sitting and looks to be holding a scale in their left hand.

Final update. Got a response from a member on the PCGS forum:

It is a Canadian Colonial Token, Military bust obverse, "TO FACILITATE TRADE 1825" seated justice reverse. Charlton catalogue # LC53 most likely subvariety LC53A "open sleeve". $7 in VG, maybe $2 as shown. If it's the closed sleeve variety then $100 in VG, maybe $25 as shown.

Per Charlton: It is thought to portay Col. de Salaberry who repelled the Americans at Chateauguay and Crysler's Farm during the War of 1812, saving Montreal.

Re: HELP! Unknown Copper - Size of large cent

Looks like a British 18th C Token. It will be quite tough to find it, if I get a spare hour, I will go through the 400 page book on them :-\

I tried looking at the date again... flipped the coin around, and what I thought was "78" in fact, looks to have been "82" as the bottom of the two was worn. I believe the date is 1825 as a 5 is now showing.

yeap, seated figure above 1823 or 25, it might also be a Canadian Token which I have no books on

I also posted the item on the PCGS world coin forum... one member responded and wrote:

It's Canadian, so you don't have to search through 400 pages of British tokens! That's a bit of a relief.

True, thought it must be Canadian when I saw the date. Most of our Token's finish in the late 18th C :icon_thumright:
