Hello, can anyone help identify this shell? Measures 12? long and 3? wide. Shell is iron with brass band about 1? up from the base that is marred from being fired. No stampings or marks. Painted red white and blue with stars and looks to have had a lead projectile tip applied to make it look complete and painted gold.
Think it is a shrapnel shell, but what era? Civil War?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

It appears to be a World War 2 era US 75mm Armor-Piercing Solid-Shot projectile. What you are calling the "lead projectile tip" is actually an aluminum cap, applied to give the projectile's blunt top a more aerodynamic shape. It's official military name is a "Ballistic Capped Shot." See the diagram below. The photo shows a 37mm specimen missing the aluminum cap.

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

In case anybody missed seeing the words SOLID-SHOT in my identification of the projectile which started this thread:
Solid steel, through-and-through... not hollow, so no explosive in 'em whatsoever.
