The only thing I inherited from my late grandmother, was this silver embossed box (I use it as a jewellery box). It is pretty worn out and damaged. There is a stamp on the back of the lid that is so worn that I can't photograph it. I can make out "A1" and either "fyn, fur, or fyr" in a circle.

I just need some info on it. Where it was made, when, etc. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks IMG-20130905-00043.webp

The border on the box, the stylistic scrolls and flowers is called rococo. That is in a very definite time frame. I'm not an expert, but there are people on this site that will know for sure. What I do know is the Kentucky Long Rifles that were manufactured in the mid to late 1700's were decorated with rococo carving in the wood, and engraving in the brass. Also furniture from that time had rococo carving on some pieces. Don't know when they stopped that carving on furniture, but by 1800 or so, it was no longer done on guns. Very interesting piece, someone on here will be able to help you more. Welcome aboard T Net.

Welcome to Treasure Net !!
How about a pic of the interior, back and even the best you can do with the 'stamp' mark.
Don.....

Thanks -- I hope you can see the mark - took the pic on my cellphone, so it's really fuzzy.

Does it attract a magnet? Can you use a digital camera on macro and take a pic of the stamp? How deep is it? When was your grandmother born? I have some ideas about your box, but would like some more information.

Right now, I'm going with biscuit/cookie/confectionery tin.

Really neat piece!

I don't really know anything about antiques like this, but is looks a lot like the cigar "humidor/box" that used to belong to my wife's grandfather or great-grandfather.

I found another... It has a mark of "CONTAINER MADE IN WESTERN GERMANY".

Well done, yet again Bramblefind :hello:

I think it's important to note the distinction between 'West Germany' and 'Western Germany', as West Germany only existed as such, during the Cold War from 1949 to 1990.
Whereas Western Germany describes the geographical lay of the land and could indicate a potential greater age than 1949 for the item.

Thanks for the info -- It does attract a magnet. It's about 9cm deep. My grandmother was born in 1930, in South Africa, but of German origin. I don't know any history of the box. I didn't even know it existed until after she died. So it could've been her mothers, grandmothers, who knows.
I'll try take a better photo of the stamp and post it soon.
