Help - the only info I can find for this token is....

[The Sanddigger]

The token reads "Bunkley Peanut Co. Smithfield, VA" on the front and "Not Transferable" on the back. But researching, I only found GWALTNEY-BUNKLEY PEANUT COMPANY from the early 1900's.

it should date before 1891. that was the date that Augustus Bunkley partnered with Gwaltney

I see a dash to the left of the "B" in Bunkley so maybe the "Gwaltney" was removed due to the damage. That would also make the wording around the edge more symmetric. It wouldn't look right without something along the left edge. Congrats on keeping your silver streak intact.

Yes I see the dash now and the Gwaltney was completely wiped off. The peanut company was in the early 1900's!

Your token was made between 1891, the date the company was incorporated and 1911 when it and other companies merged to form the American Peanut Company. Previous to 1891, Both "G" and "B" were in a business simply called Gwaltney and Bunkley.
