So my husband and I are just starting to look at old coins. He found a 1979 penny and something is stamped on the front over Lincoln that we can not make out. The back of the penny is normal, no signs of anything else. We had a guy look at it and he said he would get back in touch with us and now we can't reach him. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This picture was taken with a zoomed in phone so please bare with me until I can get something better. (Any recommendations in that would help) here is a photo (hopefully). 20170515_011602.jpeg

I don't think that is anything stamped on it. it looks like a contaminant got between the zinc and the copper plating.

No zinc in that one. That started in 1982. It is odd. Whatever the surface modification is, it left the date intact. odd.

A 1979 wouldn't have any zinc coating. Probably PMD, but, maybe better photos would help.
