Just about a month ago I posted a picture of a spur I need some opinions on how to remove rust off the chain or not to at all . I dug it a year ago and every time I check on it rust chips are falling off it , just wondering if I should try to remove the rust or just clearcoat or tung oil it as is . Any help would be greatly helpful..Davers p.s. the post is on the cleaning and preservation forum,. Thanks again:icon_thumright:

I would soak it in apple cider vinegar for 48-hours, then rinse it under warm water, dry it, and apply a VERY thin coating of olive oil (pour a small amount of oil on a rag and wipe the spur down).

+1, I used this same method for an old jaw trap that I found. It worked well.

THANKS ALOT GUYS ? Did you see the pictures.

No, I missed the photos.

Only clean an artifact or relic if you intend on keeping it for yourself. Any cleaning or restoration at all will reduce the items value with other collectors by as much as 50%. Sometimes restoration will wipe out the items value completely. Before i cleaned or retored anything, i'd get an appraisal of the items value in its current condition. Knew this gal once who refinished and polished a wooden swivle mirror from the 1800's. She cried when she found out she lost about $1200 dollars in the bargain.
