after talking about getting a detector for months I finally talked my wife into letting me get one and what I really mean is I picked a time when she wouldn't be mad if I brought one home :D So today we had a few hours we could kill and packed up the three year old and headed to a park. and power the Bounty hunter 3300 up. It appears that it came on OK, but a couple of things just don't seem to be working right. For instance it NEVER beeps or makes any noise at all. Second when it changes values it just kinda "sticks" on the last value. Mostly it was reading 199. Sometimes the value would change to say 30 and would just stay there unless I would pass over something else to make it change. I never did dig any holes. I guess I felt the thing wasn't working right and didn't want to put holes in the park :D well I don't know what the heck I'm doing :D the pinpointing didn't seem to work at all but that supposedly is based on sound and since it wasn't making any noise at all that would explain it lol So to sum it up....HELP!!!!!!!

Here is a few things to check. Make sure the ground balance knob is set to all the way to the left at preset then take out the batteries and make sure both of them are inserted tight and with the + and - in the right spot. You should hear beeps when you first turn on the 3300 if you are not try using a set of headphones. Check the plug from the coil cord to the back of the unit if it is not making good contact that can cause false signals. Take the 3300 outside and away from any big metal items then turn it on hit the Disc A-M button to ignore iron signals. If it is picking up signals without you moving the coil try turning down the sensitivity from default 4 to 3 or 2. If you still get 199s then it could be defective.

Check the battery fit, if they are loose wedge a folded piece of paper in between the door and batteries. Also, only use alkaline batteries, I didnt and had a problem with mine!

Thanks everyone for their suggestions, but nothing worked :'( guess I'm gonna have to take it back for another one. But Thanks again.

i have a Bounty Hunter 505 and the ID indicator DOES stay on the last item it ids until you swing over something else....... makes no noise or beeps until you find another target......... if you swing over something does it beep every time it goes over it?

no it doesnt beep at all. It beeped one time when I turned it on for the first time, but I think I remember reading somewhere that it was supposed to beep four times upon powering up. I just got home from work and trying to get the kid in bed, Gonna re-read the manual again to see what I can find out. But I think I may need to exchange it. Pretty disapointing working myself up for a month for something and then getting it but it not working right :D oh well I'll figure something out and when I find my first million in gold coins I'll forget all about this crazy detector :D

Did you try to test it i.e. put a quarter on the ground and ran the loop over it?

You should hear 4 tones from high to low everytime you turn it on. I have heard of other people having quality control issues with a few of them.

I bought one for my dad on Fathers Day & he had the same problem. Radio Shack sent it back to Bounty Hunter to be fixed. Took about a week. Try plugging in some headphones & see if you get sound, if you do then you'll know it is a faulty solder point to the speaker. RS may have another to exchange, otherwise its gone for a while. Good luck!

thanks guys :D finially got to pick up some headphones, actually an adapter to make my small pronged headphones into the big pronged headphone hole on the detector :D and there is sound through the headphones just not outload. So I am gonna take it back and have it exchanged or repaired. But I think I will take it out tomorrow and give her a whirle first :D any guesses on what my first find will be :D

I checked out the 3300 at my local Radio Shack. They are on sale for about $111.00. I was also told by the Radio Shack salesman that the warranty was only 90 days and it was through the Radio Shack repair service. Not Bounty Hunter.

I have a question: In an earlier post in this thread it was mentioned that Bounty Hunter repaired the 3300? Does anyone know? The 3300 at $111 is a great buy
as I understand it originally was about $300 ? Is it now a "closeout" and no longer backed by First Texas (Bounty Hunter)?

It was my fathers machine, he is 4 hours away in Montana. He told me they they tried to exchange it but there wasnt another 3300 any where in the area so RS said they would send it back to BH. We are prety sure they sent it somewhere, but I cant confirm where. It was the sound issue, no tones at all. They may have sent a new machine for all we know, took about 1 week. My 3300 is just a backup machine but Ive used mine for two days to learn it & I am VERY impressed with it, in a few hours Ive dug a few bucks in clad & a ring. Some of those coins were 7-8 inches deep! At around $100 id stick with it, take it back & get it repaired or replaced, once you get a working machine you'll be amazed! For a starter machine or a backup the 3300 cant be beat! Good luck people! ;D

;D Thank you fleamstress for getting back to me about repair. The Radio Shack
salesman look in his computor which said the 3300 that was on sale would only be warranted through Radio Shack Repair service, and then only 90 days.

It was a floor model, no box or instruction manual. I did not buy. Maybe I need to give it a second thought if it is still available. It was in the back room.
