Hey guys and gals. I need a little info on this type of button. I just purchased some to add to my button board. I am getting into collecting and I don't have a button book yet. Could someone point me in the right direction. Some of the backmarks are SCOUVILLMFG.CO WATERBURY some are HORSTMANN PHILA. There in really good shape and will look nice in my relic box. Can you guys give me some info such as year and what they are called. I am not hip on buttons yet. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Help on Button Id

Nice U.S. Army eagle button!  Below are backmarks that might help you date the button... they are close and not exact but should get you in the ballpark... I've dug dozens like that at my Indian War era site here in Montana...

My guess would be 1860s through 1910s.

SCOVILLS 1827-1840
SCOVILLS & CO.  1840-1850
SCOVILL MANUFACTURING CO.  1850-1960
SCOVILL Mg. Co. 1850-1865
SCOVILL Mg. Co. / WATURBURY CT. 1850-1865
SCOVILL Mf''g Co. WATURBURY CT. 1850-1865
SCOVILL Mf''g Co. WATURBURY 1850-1865
SCOVILL Mfg Co. WATURBURY CT. 1850-1865

W. H. HORSTMANN / PHILA.  1820-1850
W. H. HORSTMANN / NEW YORK  1820-1837
W. H. HORSTMANN & SONS  1843-1863
W. H. HORSTMANN & CO. / PHILA. 1864-1866
W. H. HORSTMANN & CO. / NEW YORK 1837-1847
HORSTMANN BROS & CO. / PHILA  1859-1863
HORSTMANN BROS & CO. / NEW YORK 1850-1852
HORSTMANN BROS & ALLIEN  1852-1877
HORSTMANN BROS & DRUCKER  1844-1850
HORSTMANN / PHILADELPHIA  1893-1935

Re: Help on Button Id

Very nice buttons. Most likely the dates 1850-1865 are correct, because several sites say so, but it is odd that I have that same SCOVILL Mf'g Co. WATURBURY backmark on my Great Seal buttons that are post 1902. So it would seem that backmark may have neen used past 1865. :icon_scratch: Just curious, what backmarks are on your Indian War buttons MJ?

Big Cy... all my buttons are in hiding. I will tell you I probebly have 15 different back marks or more and many are less common... meaning - not Scovill or Waterbury. I'm going to have to pass on this request till I dig mine out again sometime.

I do think however that it would have NOT been uncommon to have a guy get a new or replacement button from a friend, a boss, or the quartermaster to replace a lost button. Or for a fella to have different replacement sizes and makers just on a string someplace.

Re: Help on Button Id

Ok guys i recieved the buttons today. OH MY are they in great condition. Here is the deal. A guy had these buttons in Massachusetts. They were from an Old estate buy he bought. They were buttons from an old Civil war uniform. NOW the piece of Cloth that is holding all of these buttons together looks like a piece of cloth from that time period. It is very fragile. I untied the material to take a picture of the buttons front and back. I have 4 Horstmann Phila buttons. They say Horstmann, have two stars, then Phila. Then I have 2 Horstmann Philada buttons. They say Horstmann, have two stars then Philada. Then I have 2 Scovill Mfg Co. Waterbury buttons. One is a Coat size one is a cuff size. They say Scovill Mfg Co Waterbury.

Here are the pictures of them..
Like I said the fellow told me they were off of an old Civil war uniform. If you guys want me to take a closer picture of the material I can. Just give me some info on these. All you help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Buckleboy. It looks like you are right. I see the difference in the necks. They are still old and great additions to my collection. Thanks everyone.

Nice buttons!
As I was reading this post like I usually do.. I noted Buckleboy's IW/CW notes..
Isn't the shield a bit different on each too? or is it just from the pictures..
Just wondering

We call these buttons "chicken heads" they are U.S. Army buttons and were used in the LATE 1800's Spanish American war era, not civil war. nice shape!
