Hi all,

I am in the process of restoring this old ashtray. In the course of removing rust and paint, I found a mark and a few other questions came to mind:

1. 2nd photo: There is a capital "A" mark on the bottom that was revealed after I removed the rust. You can see I sealed the bottom with primer, but the mark is clearly visible toward the bottom of the photo. Does anyone know what company used this mark?

2. In the 4th photo, you can see a bolt hole that extends down from the top plate that holds the ashtray. I have some tape in that hole to protect the threads when I paint it. What goes in that bolt hole? The top plate DOES unscrew and the size is the same. However, if you remove the top plate and screw the support post into the second bolt-hole. the top plate is now vertical instead of horizontal and would not hold the ash tray. What is this second hole for?

3. In the first photo, you can see a red cap that was painted into the smaller hole on the plate. I do not think it was original. This begs the question: what was the hole for? A lighter?

Thanks for any help,
Kevo

It could have been a spot where a lamp was attached to it.

The "slot held one pack of matches...
The small hole held a little bit larger than a shot glass sized glass that would hold packs of matches...
I have seen em with coasters... table lighters... and sorts of other things.
