Please let me know from your expertise, I dont usually buy gold but I couldn't pass up this "15.35g 18kt gold ring" , apparently marked 18kt and 750. I offered for $200. They are about a half hour drive away. Can anyone let me know if anything pops out that would make it seem fake? Thanks

Look for any places where plating may have worn off.
Of course, a magnet test comes before anything else.
Reject anything with multiple stamps....they didn't get it right the first time, so they try again.
Look for any "coppery" or "brassy" patches...especially at wear points.
Personally, I leave anything alone that has green residue in the cracks.

The price of gold (US) is about $42 a gram.

15 grams times $42 would be about $630 worth of gold, for $200.

Why would they sell it so cheaply?

Take a magnet with you. Gold plated? Solid? Are they just ignorant?

Or is my math screwed up?

You are still paying less than half for scrap gold.

Again, why?

I've seen this ring and similar ones like it, all marked 750 18k. They are fake and I believe they originated in the UK.

Fake Gold Hallmarks

My suggestion would be to take it to a jeweler or pawn shop and have them test it for you, we have two places we go to when we find jewelry and aren't quite sure, Chug found a ring a couple of months ago that is marked 14 karat, but it isn't, the stores we took it to both said same thing, not real, most places are pretty good about testing items. Good luck and keep us posted please, Red:hello:

UPDATE•••

Showed up, sketchy neighbourhood, poor lit apartment building, seller did not want to meet across the street in better lit area., nevertheless, met seller, acid tested and proved fake. Stamps looked unprofessional. Told them I have to pass and hauled a** out if there. Some deals are too good to be true. Good learning experience. Thanks for your help everyone!

Be careful out there dude! The deal seemed sketchy from the start but atleast nothing bad happened! Test kits are a godsend!

An acid test will reveal a fake .....IF.....you give the acid more than a few seconds to work.
Rolled Gold or Gold Fill will s-l-o-w-l-y dissolve; you have to be patient.
^
Also, you need to get deep enough into the piece to get past any plating or fill. They probably won't let you get into it with a file.
Look more at the people selling it than the ring! If they look like sharpies....run like crazy!

Didn't look yellow enough. 18K is getting close to that buttery look. Glad you made it out unscathed. Go with a friend.

Lucky you came out with your hind end in tact.

Over the last few years, I have found several jewelry items that were marked with .750 and 18k (or kt), on the same piece, They have all turned out to be fake so far.
