A. Benedict — for Aaron Benedict— was used as the name of a firm founded in 1823 that included several partners. (Aaron Benedict had already made buttons prior to that time, but they were not so marked.) In 1829, the firm was reorganized and the name was changed to Benedict & Coe. As a result, the mark on the button you posted can be dated fairly precisely.
