this was dug 9/2/13 at a site a friend and I have been working.
I was originally a 20 acre farm site [1870s]that was also used as a orphanage [1902-1912?] then later was a dormitory [1920-1927].
This was around 7 inches deep in the same area where we recovered several coins and horse tack.
the marble/cabision is set and don't move or roll but the brass top rotates on the base.

Marble, looks to be an old one, but I'm no expert on them! Some are worth tons! I don't know about the Schroeder valve though

That's not a Schroeder valve I don't think take a pic of the bottom and post it, is there a hole!!

no hole at the bottom....if its a marble its a pee-wee sized one....its just a little larger than a pencil eraser.
I will try to post a better pic of the bottom tonight.

Can you see threads above the marble. Sure looks like an old time tire valve cover that a kid stuffed a marble into.

20130903_001053(2).jpghere is a pic of the smaller end
I have dug several of the vintage valve stem covers and this object is both smaller in length and thinner than the valve covers.
the marble end is just a little bigger than a pencil eraser.

here is a better side view of the split....it spins freely here....there is a tiny patent pending going down the side (did'nt notice it until I took the macro pics

So even though it may not be a valve stem cover, can you see any threads in the marble end? It still looks like the marble was pushed in by a kid or something. Form and function. This thing is good for nothing with the marble stuck in it, So it couldn't have been made that way. IMHO.

cant see any threads above the marble even with the magnifying glass.
I have carefully tried to remove the marble with no luck.

thanks for your input!
