The stone your friend gave you is a PIECE of a "Thunder Egg" -- which is a nickname for a Geode which is completely filled with crystals (or agate, or both) instead of being hollow inside. I said a "piece" of a Thunder Egg because somebody used a rock-cutting saw to slice a Thunder Egg into sections... and you've got one of the sections. I know about that because I've got several in my house.

Thunder Eggs are found in nature all over the world. Although some do get found in the US, most of the "cut-open" ones you see for sale here are imported from Brazil and Mexico.

Take a look at the photos in the Wikipedia entry. You'll see some similarity to yours, but the interior colors and forms in Thunder Eggs can be quite different, Literally, no two are the same.

Katelyn 0206, I see that your question is your very first post at TreasureNet. So, welcome! T-Net's "What Is It? forum is the very best place on the internet to get unknown objects CORRECTLY identified.

Looks like everything is too solid for a geode. I’m thinking it’s what they call a “bug” that’s been cut and polished. Pretty common where I live.
