Help me choosing new detector! This is so difficult...

Well last summer was my gateway to metal detecting hobby and Im so happy that my first detector was ACE 250.

I will always keep it backup detector IF I find a detector wich perform better! I have been reading and reading reviews and specs and all that but I still dont know what is the right one...

First thing is that my next detector must go deeper. Second thing that I mainly hunt in the woods and kinda rough terrain.

What do you think about Minelab Quattro? Is it suitable for hunting in the woods? Explorer SE is little too expensive for me.
I have read that Quattro is slooooooow, how could I get use to that when I have used ACE 250 with quite a speed. Heard that is heavy too.
What this slow sweeping speed actually means, how slow it is? But I need a detector wich goes deep, cause have noticed that all my best coins have been quite deep and Ace have had some difficulties to find them, still found em :) It would be too cruel to see that my new almost 1000 dollars high end detector performs very bad. What about c-scope newforce 1, or better Tesoros? DO they go deep? Fast sweeping speed? X- Terras? But Quattro has been on my mind lately. I dont care the weight of it, just performance. What about other minelabs. Better Fishers?

Im more lost, more I read and think about these detectors :-\. But I want try something else but Garrett this time. What about Quattro battey life?

Help. ??? ???

What are you hunting? Coins?Relics?

Garrett GTI 2500 is suppose to go deep with the larger coil, and if that isn't enough, you can buy the Box coils to take you down 6 feet or so.

If some people say a Minelab goes deep, someone else will say a Tesoro goes deeper. Even the Time Ranger boasts of deep detection.

Good luck. :)

Yeah it goes quite deep, more then 6" have i dug sometimes..(heavy mineralisation here) but with much trash= not good..
But What do you want to hunt and where? Wheather?(rain, snow etc)

AMA,

any clubs in your area?

Best way to make a decision. Get
to try out the members different machines.

have a good un..........

Quite a few Minelabs have the DD coil. I really think this is an advantage in covering ground with a better, deeper, more uniform signal. Any detector with a DD coil would do well for your next. I did own a Quattro for a year. It is slower to respond in general and did not care for the battery life. This is why I now use a Explorer II. I did find things withthe Quattro but always felt I was not finding as much as I expected. Never figured out why. Might have just lost confidence in the Quattro. I really like the look of the new F-4 by Fisher, price is reasonable. Whites DFX, MXT and XLT are not bad. Once again look at a few and remember even if your detector does not have a DD coil you may be able to get and use one. I would.

I would definitely go with the Quattro. The wooded areas are great places to learn to use the DD coil and how to pinpoint with it. 8)

Where do you live? You said you detect in the woods and rough terrain, right? I'd go with the Tesoro because of the lifetime warranty. But if you live outside of the US, it will take a long time for shipping should something need to be repaired on the Tesoro.

Get some good earphones, too. Good earphones will make a big difference in what you can hear, even deep things that were inaudible with cheap/junk earphones will sound off when wearing good earphones.

Well now I am in point where Quattro sounds like an bad to Finland weather conditions. I have now seriously thinked about C- Scopes. CS 1220 R is quite cheap and look like an awesome machine but Newforce R1 here at the same price as Quattro. I mostly hunt quite wet weather conditions. Coins and jewelry, relics too. I think that I need all-around detector. But in garretts pages tehy says that 250 is not very good to cache hunting, whys that cause I want find a cacge? Id does not go deep? So would this c-scope 1220 R be better than ace and quattro. Ace is a motion detector and 1220 R is non-motion. Ace runs Frequency - 6.5 kHz and 1220 runs 17kHz??? what does this mean in real simple words. Like I said doing mostly hunting in the woods and near farms and fields. HAve you guys any info about these.

Sherm. There are no clubs in Finland. There are couple of metal detectorist in Finland :D Lucky me!

Every little bit of info about these 1220 R and Newforce R1 and comparing them to Quattro wouls make me happy. Thanks in advance :)

and whats DD coil.

Ah- You are from Finland. Should have guessed from your name that you are not from Kentucky. I imagine US detector prices are sky high for you. You know the French are coming out with the Adonis- a discriminating Pulse induction unit. It is what I would be looking at for something new if I lived in Europe

From what I gather, the C-Scope 1220R is a TR detector, which generally means no ground balance and compromised depth. There are a number of forums over on your side of the pond which both deal with common detectors over there (performance, price, etc.) and have classified (sale/trade) forums. ..Willy.

Hey,
Finland? Love it. My brother went to graduate school there and worked at a very large paper mill. He also married there but relocated three years ago to Holland. I will agree that the quattro and explorers are to slow. I just got my explorer three days ago and if I pass a target at the speed I do with my xterra, I will not even get a signal. I hate that and it is very hard to get use to. I would not give up on Minelab as the xterra 70 is a nice machine and fast. The Teseros are good but to get the depth it has to be set right. The man who sold me my xterra 30 took me out on a hunt and I walked all over his $500.00 tesero. I pulled about $2.00 in clad next to holes he had dug. I was a little surprised that a 50 year old detector salesman did not know how to set up his Tesero. Or maybe it is that weird frequancy that Tesero uses. I think that the best frequancy for coin hunting will be between 6khz and 8khz. Its a hard decision I know.

I use a Minelab Quattro & get excellent battery life on rechargeable NIMH batteries. It is a great detector but takes time getting used to as it is not a turn on & go machine. It has very good depth & once You have learned it all You have to do is tweak the settings to Your preference. As far as pinpointing it is a piece of cake with the Quattro but with whatever You decide to go with I am sure the machine will serve You well.

I too was in the same predicament. I felt the Ace is a great machine but..... So last spring I purchased a Tesoro Cibola and voila!!!!! It is hands down a winner!!!! I like to coinshoot, relic hunt tramp through the woods and it shines in all modes. I recommend Tesoros because they are simple to use, lifetime warranty and are super detectors. Check out the Trident series in Europe. Good luck to you!!!

I hav enever been in Finland (I live in Sweden) but if conditions are probably (almost) a like, The Gti-2500 havs served me well here in Sweden, but as I have read others have trouble with it, what's your budget?
Maybe the LS from garrett would do you some good?? it's water proff, so no trouble with any rain, water.

Think of the form of an egg that would look like a Elliptical coil while a dd would look like a goldpan. (round)

Freeze12,

Can you get a little more specific, like the actual hours per charge. I did not have rechargeables for my Quattro, so I got the best battery life (Rayovac alkalines) you can. Mine was 4-7 hours depending on the temperature, cold would eat up the batteries. I get 9 to 13 hours with my NiMH,s and 11 to 15 with Alkalines for the Explorer II I have now. Have you ever hunted with any other detector? Why I ask is because of the weight of the Quattro and also my new Explorer II. Do you think they are a little heavy. I used the Swingy Thingy for longer outings. Saves my wrist a lot of wear and tear.

Damz68,

You can set the Explorer II to respond faster. There is a menu the lets you set the unit to response, you can set it for a faster response and or a deeper respond. Also To get the best use turn up the sensitivity as far as you can without getting chatter. Remember that the more you reject the more the unit nulls (goes silent and does not appear to respond), so to get the fastest response only reject what you absolutely need to. Finally if you are still using factory setting, don,t. I found factory setting too low and not very productive when you get to understand the unit. The Quattro will find things, found my first gold diamond ring with mine.

Have you ever tried to see just how small of a low conductive target (gold, lead) the Explorer could pick up in Disc. (wide open)? All-metal? Also, what kind of sweep speed are we looking at when set to fast? 4 filter style? ..Willy.
