would love to know what this is. flat on one side and has a raised edge on the other, and a square hole.

That square hole is probably where the day of the month would show through in a pocket watch.

Would also have to have a hole in the middle to be a pocket watch? Not a clue on this end.

it was found in elmira ny. it was in the ground and the place was a old dump, they turned into a park/ dike. the one pic has a us quarter with it. as far as what type of metal couldn't tell you and there are no marks or writing on it, that i can see. hope that helps a little.

Hmmm. Right. Notice any corrosion that might cover a small hole? Clean it up!

Line a small bowl or dish with a piece of aluminum foil. Place item onto the foil at the bottom. Pour in a spoonful of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda (Sodium Carbonate) and add boiling water. Watch it bubble, let it cool, take it out and give it a light brushing under some water.
You could try electrolysis too.

It is magnetic, e.g. will a magnet stick to it?

This test will give us some kind of idea of the type of metal it's made of.

Most of us do research to ID what something is, if we don't know what it is, such as in this case, so we need as much info as possible, thus the questions we ask.

You didn't answer my question, is it magnetic?

yes it is magnetic. it looks like it is pressed or stamped. i say that because of the beveled edge on the front.

Cycluran,

Unless it was in the script of the Goonies, we'll never know!!!:icon_scratch:

Hah! AU Seeker got it:laughing7: Seriously though. Take a refrigerator magnet and tell us if it sticks.
