If it's not slag glass, search moldavite images and compare.
Moldavite tektite.
Where you find it, what state? I know where there are some at.

I think it's glass. we lived close to pittsburg plate glass growing up, & we had some pieces of it. It's pretty, & hard to get now days.

I didn't find it, it's a friends and we're trying to figure out what is is, it came from a woman that was geologist in California, came from her personnel collection, that's about all we know, it doesn't have any bubbles, doesn't most slag have bubbles?

Thanks for your opinion, have any pics of those pieces you had?

in my experience from the slag glass i have sliced and cabbed, some have no bubbles, some have a few, and some slag glass have many bubbles. if yours is from a geoligist there must be a good reason to have kept it.

As I've stated within this post: http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/rocks-gems/313648-not-all-glitters.html What you have is glass blower slag and a very clean form of it.. Gem mines us this to "intice" buys to buy that bucket or pile etc.. I see this "slag" every where.

Now as for the Green Obsidian.. Its typically man made and would look/appear dark green & very dence. (unable to see through)

I still have a couple pieces of it. My daughter has my camera right now, but will take a pic as soon as I get it back. (I hope I get it back)
Did you know in Egypt (?) there is a part of the desert that has green "glass" scattered in a certain area. they believe it was "made" when there was an explosion similar to the one in Russia in 1908. It happened in the atmosphere close enough to melt the sands, but didn't leave impact site, or crater. I guess the pharos used it as gem stones. don't blame them. slag glass is beautiful

Early Egyptians also used obsidian for scalpels....as do high end plastic surgeons today

Given that it was in a collection from a California geologist, I lean toward it being a rock.
One of my first thoughts was a nice piece of chrysoprase, green chalcedoney, which is found in California.
It does also look like slag glass. A hardness test will tell the diference.

Do wikipedia it, (moldavite). It is a glass (tektite) believed to come from outer space. The glass in Egypt could very well be moldavite. As this glass also can be found in the south, strewn throughout crop fields in certain areas. If it is moldavite, it's a really nice specimen! I would think such large chryspophase would not be as translucent, but I am no expert.

It is also believed this may be the stone in Mecca, that Muslims worship, as being the stone that fell from heaven, or they have a meteorite, one or the other.
I found this link with a bunch of pics. The green moldavite is down at the bottom.
Tektites

Then again, I may have no idea what I am talking about, too! LOL! :cat:

Did what you said and Googled moldavite. It said that there are impact marks on it from other space particles hitting it. It looks like a portion of it contains those marks. I have seen green slag, but not moldavite. Guess it could be either one, but like you, I lean toward moldavite. But I could be very wrong too...

isn't moldavite harder than obsidian? 5.5 for obsidian 6.5-6.9 for moldavite
hard to believe moldavite would be 20-25 pounds
my best guess is still slag glass.

I really do appreciate everyone's input and opinions, I'm still confused, why would she keep it if it wasn't something more than glass or slag, then again maybe she wasn't that great of a geologist, or died before she had an opportunity to check it out well, does anyone know how you go about testing it?
