I am a button collector but military buttons are way out of my league. I found this in the bottom of a large jar of buttons acquired in an Estate Sale in Dayton Oh. It has definitely been in the ground. I did not attempt to clean it. The front is missing some parts, the back is gone except for the shank. It is a raised figure. Tried to match up the olive branch and Eagles head but I am lost. This is difficult I know but would welcome any ideas FCE8DE95-4FCF-4D9B-9207-3D888BE100D9.webpFCE8DE95-4FCF-4D9B-9207-3D888BE100D9.webpACH]495EEE7A-AFB7-44D3-A350-D6703EA1A2CE.webp

Welcome to the forums. It is a Union eagle button and the back is not gone, just really pushed in. It dates from about 1875-1902. The raised shield is the way to date it. You might try cleaning the back with a tooth pick or tooth brush and a little water to see if the button has a backmark. Do not submerge it in water as some may get inside the button and cause corrosion.
