OK, I found this tonight within 50 feet of where I found my 1913 Barber Dime the other day. it was about 5" deep. This coin is the same size as a Nickle but slightly thinner than a modern Nickle. It has Green all over both sides. Photos don't capture the head on one side. I want to guess it may be a Buffalo Nickle but I just cant tell for sure. I didn't think a Buffalo would Roast like this but what do I know. Any Ideas? Thanks for any help.

With that much crap on it, and if it's nickel size I'd venture to guess it's a V-nickel

What did it ring up as on your machine? Sorta looks like an Indian Head penny.....

I think it was showing a 45-60 range one the Ace 400. It is larger diameter than a penny. Almost exactly the same size round as a modern Nickle but thinner,

I think you have a crusty shield nickle

I'm always up for learning about stuff, so I got out my coin book and saw that the Shield nickels were .750 copper and .250 nickel. So that explains why it looks all green and crusty. Good luck with the ID!!!

I'd recommend electrolysis

Cleaned it up. Face side is not identifiable. But reverse has a Buffalo. So it is a Buffalo Nickel. Date unknown.

Buffalo nickels are also 75% copper so that still makes sense.

My buddy dug a crusty shield nickle recently that was also very hard to ID. That's what made me guess shield.
After electrolysis you could see the date and everything, very impressive.

Great find, thanks for sharing.

Yes my first one while metal detecting. Found some in change before. The area where this one was found used to be an old Baseball field and the bleachers and food stand were in this area. I think it was fertilized heavy at some point and this might be the problem.

UPDATE to the UPDATE! With a little more cleaning in the date area I can barely see an "18". So knowing that it was made in the early 1900's I have to assume it is a 1918 Nickle. OK, I'm done! Solved! I just wish my camera could pick up on it.
