Haven't posted in a bit but a friend of mind found this object and we're trying to figure out what it is. He lives on a bluff overlooking the Appomattox River at what was City Point during the Civil War. Buried about 2 ft into an embankment over the river. It's roughly spherical and weights approx 11-12 lbs. Seems to be a solid lead ball encased in a copper sheathing, copper appears to be about 1/8 in thick.. In the pic, you can see where the copper split exposing the lead core. Anybody got any ideas?

That’s a head scratcher for sure. Hard to tell actual size of the object. It appears to have been railed on pretty hard with a cross peen hammer.

Does it have a polygon like shape? It almost looks to have uniform sides under all that damage.
