Any ideas what this copper or bronze thing is?? I found it at a colonial site.

Sorry for my ignorance on the subject, but what do you mean by "from a book???"
Also, What do you think is the age of this item??

Not to rain on Skabas parade or anything but Some books came with a "belt and buckle" sewn on the covers to keep them closed. THis would be the keeper for the loose end of the belt after the book was buckled. It could be as early as the first known books but I would say this is turn of the century to 1930"s

This could also be a keeper off of a small trunk or leather box. anyones guess.

I found the same item at a house site dated 1784 and never could figure out what it was except it was some type of belt keeper.vanzutphen
