Hi experts. I find a lot of buttons and don't generally worry about its origin or can find them myself most of the time. This particular one I am having difficulty with and its out of place based on the usual finds. I found it searching a sports field that used to be a golf course at the turn of the century. I believe the back was iron/steel because it was completely gone when I retrieved it from the earth and there is rust evident. I have come close to the style but can't find an exact match. I'm thinking late 19th/early 20th century but its a wild guess.

The first two pictures are similar brass backed buttons found on the web. The second two are front and back of my button. (For some reason the pictures are out of order from how I uploaded them). Thanks for any help ID'ing and dating this button.

For some reason they made civilian versions of some military navy buttons back in the 20s to 40s. Most of the time they were for blazers. Generally speaking, when the back is made of iron or steel, they are the fashion buttons. I would think that is why you are having trouble with an exact match. Regards.

Your button is definitely a civilian "Fashion" imitation of an actual US Navy button. Among various other differences between the actual US Navy buttons and yours, note the shape of the wing-tops. They are VERY rounded on your Fashion button. The civillian imitations are still being manufactured and sold today. You can buy them a fabric-&-sewing-supplies stores, such as JoAnn Fabrics.
